How not to be afraid of the dentist

If you are afraid of going to the dentist, you are not alone. Fear of the dentist is very common. If you're getting hot and sweaty at the thought of booking a dental appointment, the following article has tips and techniques to help you cope. Dental phobia is something we take very seriously at our Awodent clinic. We know that some patients who suffer from it do everything they can to avoid going to the dentist and turn up at our chair forced to do so by extreme pain or swelling.

Why does anxiety sometimes arise from visiting the dentist?

Most people experience dental anxiety to some degree, especially if they are dealing with procedures that are new to them. It is often a fear of the unknown. Fear of the dentist is usually concrete. If someone is afraid of it, they can usually say exactly what they are afraid of. Fear of visiting usually starts in childhood or is passed on by parents.

However, if someone suffers from a dental phobia, the fear they feel is irrational and so intense that they avoid the dentist until they are in very severe pain. People with dental phobia are aware that the fear is completely irrational, but are unable to do anything about it.

How to deal with the fear of a dentist?

1. Take your time, there is no rush

During the visit we are never in a hurry, we give enough time to listen to you. We can take a break at any time during your visit, just let your dentist know.

2. Use some of these relaxation techniques during your visit

When people are nervous, they tend to hold their breath, which lowers oxygen levels and further increases feelings of panic. As with some meditation techniques, focusing on slow, regular breathing helps reduce stress levels.

3. Share your concerns with us

If you're tense or anxious, be sure to tell your dentist so they can tailor your treatment to your needs. We are here to listen to you and provide you with the best care tailored to your needs.

4. Make your next appointment before you leave our Awodent clinic

You are more likely to attend your next appointment if you don't have to contact the practice later to schedule it.

Dealing with anxiety about visiting the dentist requires a combination of the above. Our clinic has treated thousands of patients who were initially afraid of visits. We give our patients a sense of security and support to overcome any fears and keep their teeth healthy through regular visits.
